From March through till the end of September the Milky Way galactic core is visible in Australia. Of course the galactic core is always there, but does not rise above the horizon at night time from October through to March. When it is visible, this time of year is known as Milky Way season.
A long exposure is required, but no longer than 20 - 25 seconds as the stars will start to leave trails. A large aperture of f2.8 and a high ISO of 3200 is also needed to allow as much light in onto the cameras sensor.
